Meet the Media Guru: Future Ways of Living with Arjun Appadurai


Meet the Media Guru, partner of Artemide, and the Triennale of Milan in collaboration with Institute without Boundaries | George Brown College in Toronto conclude the Special Program Future Ways of Living, a co-production created in the occasion of XXI International Triennale Exhibition Milano 2016 – 21st Century. Design After Design.

The last meeting on Wednesday, 27 July is with Arjun Appadurai, socio-cultural anthropologist and one of the world’s leading experts in the study of cultural dimensions of migration processes and globalization.

At Meet the Media Guru, Appadurai will lead a reflection from his latest book “The future as a cultural fact”. According to the Indian anthropologist must “build a future of understanding by examining the interactions between three important human concerns that shape the future as a cultural fact (…) imagination, expectation and aspiration.”

Meet the Media Guru: Future Ways of Living

On the occasion of the XXI Triennale di Milano, Meet the Media Guru, partner of Artemide, presents in co-production with the Triennale, Future Ways of Living, a cycle of events dedicated to directions in global innovation, realized in synergy with the Institute without Boundaries | George Brown College of Toronto.
From 31 May to 27 July we will be bringing together a variety of ideas on the themes of design, future cities and sustainability.
A voyage around the world offering unexpected points of view and opening up new perspectives that prompt us to say: “Oh, so there’s something else”.
The protagonists of the five events are John Thackara (Great Britain), Mugendi K. M’Rithaa (Kenya), Jonathan Woetzel (USA/China), Luigi Ferrara (Canada) and Arjun Appadurai (India).
On May 31th (7 pm) design expert John Thackara, founder and director of The Doors of Perception, will speak about Urban Future at La Triennale. Social practices are the key to urban transformation. At La Fabbrica del Vapore, on June 8th (7.30 pm), Mugendi K. M’Rithaa, president of ICSID | International Council of Societies of Industrial Design focuses on what industrial design really is, with a special focus on Africa, the continent where he was born, lives and works. On June 15th (7.30 pm) at BASE Milano we’ll meet Jonathan Woetzel, american founder of Urban China Initiative think tank to focus how China is working on massive urbanization. On June 29th (7.30 pm) at the Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia Luigi Ferrara, Dean of the George Brown College Centre for Arts, Design and Information Technology of Toronto and director of the Institute Without Boundaries will discuss how a new generative and collaborative design practice will influence a new wisdom economy. On July 27th  (7.30 pm) we’ll host Arjun Appadurai at La Triennale for his lecture about the way a social improvement can lead a cultural transformation (and viceversa).
