Milan, May 28, 2014 – The International Jury of the 23rd ADI Compasso d’Oro Awards attributed the ADI Compasso d’Oro Award to the Artemide IN-EI Issey Miyake collection designed by Issey Miyake and the Reality Lab.
The lamp Copernico, designed by Carlotta de Bevilacqua and Paolo Dell’Elce, received the ADI Compasso d’Oro Mention of Honour.
The long-standing connection between Artemide and the ADI Compasso d’Oro Awards started back in 1967 with the lamp Eclisse, then continued with the lamps Tolomeo and Pipe. In 1994 Artemide received the Compasso d’Oro Award for Life Achievements and two of its lamps, characterized by great technological innovation and great design, are rewarded today with these important acknowledgement.
The awarding ceremony of ADI Compasso d’Oro took place in Milan, its city of origin, on occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Awards.
The objects awarded with the Prize and the Mention of Honour are now part of the ADI Compasso d’Oro Collection, appointed “Asset of international interest” in 2004, a testimony of 60 years of history of Italian design.
IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE – ADI COMPASSO D’ORO AWARD
IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE is a collection of different lamp styles designed by Issey Miyake in co-operation with the Reality Lab.
The fabric at the basis of the entire collection is a recycled material – a regenerated fibre obtained from PET bottles produced by means of innovative techniques – that boasts interesting light-diffusion properties while ensuring a 40% reduction of energy consumption and of the CO2 emissions that would be produced if new materials were manufactured.
The unique folds that create the plastic shapes and give strength to the lamps are obtained by means of an original technology conceived by Issey Miyake.
The artistic philosophy of Issey Miyake, applied to three-dimensional mathematical formulas, combines the Japanese lighting culture with the designer’s own ability to translate tradition into modernity.
The result is a set of lamps with highly evocative shapes, which Artemide animates with LED sources – today the most effective technology in terms of sustainability.
132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE – “Lighting art has its conceptual and technological background at the Miyake Design Studio, established in 2010, when Issey Miyake and his research and development team Reality Lab introduced “132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE”. This new process was developed by Jun Mitani using a mathematical programme based on three-dimensional geometric formulas. “132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE” is the meeting point between creativity and mathematical analysis and is based on a special material that takes and retains 3D forms starting from an individual piece of fabric. The Reality Lab. first explored the potentials of “132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE” in the apparel world, then transferred them to the lighting sector. IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE is the result of an association between the skills of Artemide in lighting and the innovative approach of the Reality Lab. to materials and design.”
COPERNICO – ADI COMPASSO D’ORO MENTION OF HONOUR
Copernico, designed by Carlotta de Bevilacqua and Paolo Dell’Elce, is a suspension lamp made up of nine concentric mobile ellypses obtained from a single laser-cut anodized-aluminium sheet, supporting a set of 384 white LEDs.
Its limited bulk and weight result into a significant reduction of the energy consumed for transportation and storage. Its mobile elements, and the very low voltage and low-consumption LED sources allow to configure light in space by physically grasping and moving the object, thus adjusting emission for full control and determination of one’s light in space.
The design process of this technological lighting appliance originates from the ten-year long partnership between Carlotta de Bevilacqua and Artemide, from the publication of the “Manifesto on Good Light, “ and from the social and environmental goals of the project – less material, less energy, long-lasting products and services, with no compromise on performance, light quality, and light beauty.
Both projects – IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE and COPERNICO – clearly testify to the commitment of Artemide towards on-going research aimed at developing and adopting lighting systems that ensure maximum energy efficiency combined with consumption reduction and eco-sustainable development.
