A coherent example of how design can be a concrete strategic lever for cultural and economic growth, he has always worked to ensure that Italian design is a virtuous example at an international level.”
Compasso d’Oro Awards - Discovery Suspension
“When turned off it is a slender metal ring that describes a silent emptiness suspended in space. Turned on, it suddenly becomes an intensely luminescent disc creating a surprise that is the true soul of this product.”
ADI has awarded two important prizes to Ernesto Gismondi and Artemide. Compasso d’Oro to the Career was assigned to the founding engineer of the company that he has been leading for 59 years, not only as an entrepreneur but also with intervention as designer, including Discovery, the innovative suspension, which was also awarded Compasso d’Oro 2018.
Ernesto Gismondi not only founded and directs Artemide but, as Aeronautical and Missile engineer teaches Motor for Missiles at the Politecnico of Milan between 1964 and 1984. He is one of the creators of Memphis and he has held over the years numerous position within Industriale Lombarda (Assolombarda), Federmeccanica, Confindustria, Ente Autonomo Fiera di Milano, Cosmit, CNEL and at the Ministry for University and Reasearch, also becoming ADI vice president.
Amongst the numerous and prestigious awards he was named Cavaliere del Lavoro in 2008.
In his entrepreneurial career with Artemide he has lead the productive, commercial and financial strategies without ever abandoning his passion for design and the “value of doing”. Passion that over the years he has daily expressed not only in the direct relationship with designers and architects but also in the drawing of several successful products.
The letter includes the award-winning Discovery. Expression of the best Italian design, Discovery interprets research, technological and material values that have always guided Ernesto Gismondi not only in the design but also in the company’s development.
Discovery is a totally absent and dematerialized element that acquires volume when it is turned on through a comfortable and perfect emission even for work spaces. Presented in 2015 in the suspended version and in 2016 in the wall version, today it is also available in three different vertically suspended dimensions. An even more magical and scenographic element, that is capable of interacting with the surrounding environment, framing perspectives, points of view or details thanks to its perfect transparency when switched off.
It is a perfectly transversal and surprising solution in translating innovation into the emotion of light perception.
